Task 1.9: Single Camera Techniques
What is Single Camera filming? Single camera is shooting a video with only one camera for the whole thing and it is often used if there is a low budget for the video. However, it is also used to demonstrate creativity in video, ‘OK GO’ show this creativity throughout most of their music videos, for example in their song writings on the wall. There are two ways to use single camera, number one is using one single shot and filming the whole thing without stopping. The second way is to use different takes of different shots, which is similar to multi camera. Advantages and Disadvantages – (One long shot) Using one long take for the music video can be very affective as seen with OK GO’s writings on the wall, it makes the video very intriguing and make the viewer want to watch more. On top of this it is much cheaper than using multi cam. Using one single shot can also be very beneficial in terms of time consumption as there is very little editing that is needed to be done. On the other hand, using one long shot can also be a bad idea; this is because it can take days and even weeks to get the quality that you want. Genre is kept throughout the video as everything that is captured the shots (even just for a second) has to like it fits in the video. For example all the bystanders (if any) have to be dressed like they are from the genre of the music. Additionally single camera could not be used to film a programme, as it is way harder to tell the story. Advantages and disadvantages - (different shots) Using loads of different shots with one camera can be a big disadvantage as the camera needs to be placed perfectly when filming the next shot as it could look out of place or even look like it has moved. Also it means that everything has to stay in exactly the same place as it was before otherwise it would look weird if objects were miraculously moving slightly in each shot. This way of filming would make filming a video like 'OK GO's writings on the wall very difficult. On the other hand if done properly this way of filming can be beneficial as it breaks up the amount of filming done at one time. This means that if something isn't quite right during filming they don't have to film the whole thing again. Evaluation Overall single camera filming is effectively filming on a budget or to emphasise creativity. Using one long shot means there will be less editing but also can take much longer than using loads of different shots. However using loads of different shots could make the video confusing as there might be a few objects that move around in the video. it all depends on what is being filmed to tell if single camera is needed to be used.
